1.  BACKGROUND AND SCOPE

Mangrove Forest constitute a unique ecosystem between seawater and coastal land, supporting a wide variety of biodiversity. They give good fishing places and have a great influence upon local community and waterfront development. They play an important role in coastal protection by acting as a natural buffer to water and wind erosion from both the land and the sea. They always decrease sea pollution due to sewage from the land. It is also said that mangrove forests can protect coastal areas from tsunami by absorbing some of the wave energy. Mangrove areas may be used for recreation and tourism. Eco tourism do not only brings economic benefit but contribute to environmental protection. It can promote awareness of travelers about the importance of nature protection. Mangrove forests are however disappearing at a rapid rate due to human activities such as agricultural, residential and farming development. Especially, the current progressive movement of globalization has allowed various stakeholders an access of mangrove resources and consequently dismantled the local governance scheme for preservation of mangrove forests in Asian countries. It is needed to investigate their current state and take effective methods or planning to preserve and regenerate mangrove forests.
