Research Project

1. Statistical yearbook of traffic volume of Korea in 2007
A. Objective: Offering trustable traffic volume data in Korea
B. Specific task: System operation, field survey, data calibration & analysis, making reform measure
C. Conclusion & achievement : Statistical yearbook was published- Database is offering by internet (http://www.road.re.kr/) 

2. Performance and economic analysis of superpave / optimization maintenance strategic.
A. Objective: Post-evaluation of introduced super-pave in Korea national highway
B. Specific task: Field survey for 2 months (Performance index of pavement), Application and calibration of HDM-4, Life cycle cost analysis of road project, Optimization of road pavement maintenance policy.
C. Conclusion & achievement :
 -Superpave was superior to conventional HMA (Hot Mixed Asphalt).
 -That project is cost-effective for long-term road maintenance plan.
 - Research papers were published and presented in several scientific journals and conferences.

3. Development of travel time estimation algorithm by using GPS
A. Objective: Travel time estimation of national highway using GPS data.  
B. Specific task: Field survey for 3 days (by prove car), Application of artificial neural network (upgrade version) and Kalman filtering method. Data fusion between detector and prove car
C. Conclusion & achievement
- We developed advanced estimation model considering various situation and assumption
- Research paper was published and presented in scientific journals and conferences. 

4. Arrival time estimation model of BIS (bus information system) in Dae-jeon
A. Objective: To inform citizen of trustable bus arrival information, we have to improve accuracy of existing bus information system.
B. Specific task: Collecting travel time data by transmission between beacons and terminal that is installed prove car (taxies and buses), Application of Kalman-filtering algorithm.
C. Conclusion & achievement:
- Estimation model has improved estimation result than existing system.
- The system are applied for bus information system in Dae-jeon now 

5. Travel time estimation model considering homogeneous section
A. Objective: Various detectors for traffic information cannot be installed every section, because of ITS budget limitation. So we need to develop travel time estimation model based on homogeneous concept.
B. Specific task: Field survey for 3 days (travel time by license plate matching method and prove car), Development of outlier filtering algorithm (prove car based approach), Making model using artificial neural network which is applied self-organization system, Making model using Kalman-filtering algorithm, Comparison between the individual and homogeneous model
C. Conclusion & achievement: - Homogeneous section based model has a relatively reasonable estimation result to compare with individual based model. - Research paper was published and presented several conferences. 

6. Determination model of Homogeneous section of Korea national highway
A. Objective: There is a need for determining homogeneous section combining individual section that have similar traffic characteristic for effective introduction and operation of ITS on national highway.
B. Specific task: Field survey for 3 days (traffic volume, land use), Statistical analysis of traffic information, traffic flow analysis by simulator
C. Conclusion & achievement
- We make homogeneous section determination model (methodology) considering multi-dimension
- The methodology has applied as reference on national highway ITS system when determine the traffic provision section, block section for data calibration and unit of detector installation.
- Research paper was published and presented in a scientific journal and conference
