Introduction

The second International Conference on Multi-national joint venture for Construction works 2006

1. About the Conference

Globalization of construction markets is gaining momentum particularly in developing countries. For developing countries intending to procure the supply of infrastructure facilities, involvements of foreign contracting firms with high technological skills are essential. Foreign and local contractors can be complementary to each other in the field of engineering techniques, route for construction and materials procurements, market strategies etc. by organizing joint ventures (JVs) in managing the construction works.

However, it is often the case in international joint venture projects that constraints exist in collaboration or contractual relationships among multi-national contractors and owners because of the many different cultural foundations, different technical knowledge level, or strategic behaviors. Such constraints may be due to factors such as high complexity of institutional problems and the uncertainties and risks involved throughout the life of a project. Understanding the mechanisms of collaborative or contractual relationships among the parties involved in JVs contributes to the realization of infrastructure projects in developing countries that meets the nationsf aspiration.

From such a viewpoint, the first international conference entiled the gInternational Conference on multi-national joint venture for Construction works ? towards new concepts and paradigms in multi-national joint venture contractingh was held in Penang Malaysia on 5th and 6th March 2005. The conference was jointly organized by International Innovation Center, Kyoto University, Graduate School of Urban Management, Kyoto University and Kulliyya of Architecture and Environmental Design, International Islamic University Malaysia. This work was also in conjunction with the Water Environmental Planning Groups supported by Malaysian and Japanese Universities under the JSPS-VCC program.

After the first initial successful event of the gInternational Conference on multi-national joint venture for Construction worksh, this conference is attracting more and more interests and need being expanded in different places as well as being extended in contents. This year 2006, the conference continues to be organized in Hanoi, Vietnam with the title of  gNew Directions in International joint ventures for construction: theory and practiceh. The conference is jointly organized by Graduate School of Urban Management, Kyoto University and the University of Transport and Communications Vietnam (UTC) in Hanoi, Vietnam on 28th and 29th September 2006 in UTC. This conference is also in association with Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and National University of Singapore (NUS).
